People who succeed at this long-term generally aren't the ones who log with surgical precision. They're the ones who log consistently enough, for long enough, to see the pattern — and who treat the number as a rough steering wheel rather than a verdict.

A few habits close most of the practical gap without requiring obsessive precision:

  1. Weigh what you can, when it's easy — a kitchen scale for a week or two recalibrates your sense of what a "cup" or "handful" actually looks like, even if you eyeball things afterward.
  2. Log cooking oils and sauces on purpose. They're the single most commonly missed source of calories.

  4. Look at the weekly average, not the daily number. One high day or one low day is noise; four weeks of trend is signal.
